"It must really be a lonelier journey than anyone could imagine. Cutting through absolute darkness, encountering nothing except the occasional stray hydrogen atom. Flying blindly into the abyss, believing there lays the answers to the mysteries of the universe. And us, to that end how far should we go, and how far can we go?"

Ok, I want to hold a tumblr debate. Basically tumblr is great for the exchange of ideas, but the fact we’re pretty inarticulate about it bothers me. What I’m saying is everyone exchanges thoughts…
Hmm.. I disagree. I feel like macho characters have crushes, love, and emotions whether they are male or female. I also do not think that being feminine has to mean being weak and lovey-dovey… I think Korra is the way she is because she is supposed to be basically the opposite of Aang, simply to show that the avatar can appear in many different people, giving different avatars different obstacles to face.
I also do not think that Korra’s supposed “female” characteristics are depicted as negative at all. Bolin is very “feminine,” and he is not seen as weak at all, so I don’t think that Korra is being used to show that being “feminine” is wrong, or that its wrong for a woman to be “feminine.” I did not see Korra’s crush or emotions as a weakness at all. She has a very strong sense of pride, I don’t think that is necessarily a masculine trait. By stating that she is a bad “Strong Female Character” because she is head strong, brave, and full of pride, I feel like you are almost lessening the sex. I do not think that a strong female character has to be emotional, weak, and “girly” to be a strong female character.
There is nothing wrong with being “feminine,” and in “Avatar: The Last Airbender” there were multiple strong, “girly” characters… but I do not think that every strong female characters have to have “feminine” traits… I know from experience that a woman can be just as stubborn, prideful, and headstrong as any man(my mother -_-‘)… I don’t see a female character like that as a lessening of “feminine” traits, or that it depicts them as wrong or bad… I also do not think that having a crush etc. is a feminine trait… as Bolin obviously had a crush on Korra, and Mako has a crush on Korra as well, and they are both men who are not depicted as weak, at least I did not see that in the show so far.
I feel that Korra can be seen as a “Strong Female Character.” But I also think she should be classified as a person… I think the point is a girl can be “masculine”… and shouldn’t have to be classified by what you call feminine traits… While I read what you wrote, I couldn’t help but feel that you were very much perpetuating gender rules… I don’t see any problem with Korra being “a man”… not all woman are what some people call “feminine.”
I’ll admit, I don’t like her crush on Mako.. I find it slightly uncharacteristic, but I don’t think its being used as a weakness at all… I think, if anything, its most likely there simply to try and get more views and fans, as romance seems to sell… I don’t think they gave her a crush to add feminine qualities to her, because as I have said before, more men have crushes and show emotion in the show than women so far… So I really don’t think that “feminine” traits are being lessened in any way by Korra’s character. :P
